Olivia Horwedel (European & Anishinaabe Descent) is currently a PhD Candidate at the University of Washington in the Geography Department. Growing up in Michigan, Olivia’s life has always revolved around water. This led her to pursue her Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan in Marine Science, Sustainable Food Systems and Native American Studies. Olivia continued her education at UW for her Masters of Marine Affairs and certificate in Indigenous Studies.
Olivia has worked as a Science Communication Fellow for Washington Sea Grant, instructed courses on Urban Farming and Sustainable Food Systems at UW, and is currently serving as the Assistant for the Cross-Pacific Indigenous Aquaculture Network. Her graduate work continues to emphasize Indigenous marine conservation and coastal food systems through kinship, the reawakening of ancestral practices, and place-based relations.
